    Field Day Thoughts

    Based on experience at several Field Day operations, I offer the following as ideas for us to think about as we plan for Field Day 2014. Our members did a good job setting up and operating stations during Fort Herriman Days and during Field Day. Bravo.

    I would like HARC to consider having a Field Day chairperson and three committees. The chairperson would coordinate overall efforts and provide members with updates at meetings and via email. The chairperson also would prepare a budget to cover costs for equipment rentals, access fees, food, printing, mailing, etc. The chairperson could head one of the three committees.

    I doubt one person can handle all of the details because we have so many types of operations and interests–SSB, CW, packet, RTTY, antennas, QRP, and so on. A bit more attention to details and planning can make set-up, tear-down, and operating easier on us all, with fewer decisions made at the last minute. Also, by planning and coordinating activities far in advance we will have more fun and attract new members!

    Here’s how I have divided tasks and responsibilities, although not all would apply for each field activity. These three committees would communicate among themselves and keep HARC members informed about plans to date:

    LOGISTICS
    Site location — scouting and selection with HARC members approval
    Parking situation, equipment-trailer accommodations
    Maps and directions
    Permissions, access, keys…
    Restrooms
    Special Needs(?)
    Camping facilities
    Food, grills, coolers
    Tables, chairs, tent/canopy

    OPERATIONS
    Radio equipment
    Transceivers needed
    Antennas needed
    Laptops
    Other equipment (antenna tuners, antenna analyzers, RTTY interface…)
    Power source
    Local (check with Logistics for site info)
    Generators
    Extension cords, adapters, plug strips, fuses
    Band plan — what bands to operate on and when
    Staffing and operating schedules
    Repeater use–repeaters, tones, locations, frequencies…
    Tools and miscellaneous hardware required
    Logs (paper, PC, compilation…)

    PUBLICITY and TRAINING
    Mailings
    Flyers
    Handouts on site
    Photography
    Press releases and news stories
    Forms and signs
    HARC Web information
    Facebook
    Herriman City Web site information
    Personal checklists of equipment and supplies
    Buttons
    HARC-member name tags
    Herriman City Volunteer badges coordination
    Instruction manuals for on-site information
    Special instructions for other equipment or setup
    Communications and updates to HARC members
    FCC frequency-allocation charts (color)
    Operational training for new members

    I welcome your ideas for additions and changes. And we can discuss FD 2014 operations and plans at our August meeting.
